Behind the Scenes of Lisa’s “Rockstar” MV (cameraman)

July 31, 2024

Hey everyone. I’m incredibly proud to share my experience as the Steadicam/camera operator on Lisa’s latest music video, “Rockstar.

I was entrusted to capture Lisa’s incredible energy and performance, working under the guidance of director of photography Mauro Chiarello. We used a combination of Steadicam, AR Omega head, and an R2 remote head on a crane to film most of the shots. While Mauro focused on the overall lighting and composition, I collaborated closely with director Henry to design shots that perfectly matched the energy of the music. It was a truly collaborative experience that allowed me to contribute creatively.

One of the most technically challenging aspects was the Time Slice sequence (0:55-0:58 on mv), which involved using a Bullet Time camera rig provided by Pro-Toys. This technique utilizes multiple still cameras triggered simultaneously to create a multi-angle, slow-motion effect.

Another challenging sequence was the Robot Arm Motion Control shot (2:00-2:14 on mv), operated by Rob Erik Van Gelder. We captured multiple takes with Lisa in different positions and then seamlessly matched them together, giving the illusion of multiple Lisas in a single frame.

Beyond the technical challenges, filming on location in Yaowarat presented its own set of hurdles. Unlike a controlled studio environment, shooting in a public space required meticulous planning and coordination. Security was paramount, especially given the need to keep Lisa’s involvement under wraps. We weren’t able to shut down streets entirely, so we had to work quickly and efficiently during designated time slots.

The dancers were also incredible.

Sometimes they had to learn new choreography on the spot based on the director’s vision. Their flexibility, quick thinking, and talent were truly impressive.

Speaking of secrecy, I only found out I’d be filming Lisa when I arrived on set! The project was shrouded in confidentiality, with the artist only referred to as “Number One Female Rock Artist.” Imagine my excitement and surprise when I realized it was Lisa!

Working with Lisa was an absolute pleasure.

We communicated mainly about the shots and technical aspects during filming. Everyone on set maintained a professional demeanor, balancing their roles as fans with their responsibilities as crew members.

I’m incredibly proud that Lisa chose to film in Thailand and showcase our local talent. It speaks volumes about her connection to her roots and her belief in the quality of our creative industry. This project is a testament to what we can achieve as a nation.

Finally

I want to advocate for greater government support for our entertainment industry workforce. Having studied film and worked in the US, I can confidently say that Thai crews are just as skilled as those in Hollywood. However, we often lack adequate labor protections, benefits, and workplace safety standards. With more support, the Thai film industry can truly thrive on a global scale.
